Circular Programs for Sustained Ocean Health.
At Hoʻomalu Ke Kai, we are committed to taking ocean conservation and restoration to the next level for Kauaʻi and its next generation. Our approach involves upcycling up to 50% of the ocean plastic we find on cleanups into long-term building materials, establishing a sustainable foundation for a Kauaʻi Coral Restoration Nursery, and reaching out to the next generation through various outreach programs. We believe that these steps will help us connect the circle on sustainable and effective programs for Kauaʻi's marine ecosystems' overall health and next generations.
01
Marine Ecosystem Conservation & Restoration.
At Hoʻomalu Ke Kai, we are deeply committed to the preservation and rejuvenation of our precious marine ecosystems. Through our Marine Ecosystem Conservation & Restoration program, we implement a multifaceted approach aimed at addressing the challenges facing our oceans.
Coral Reef Survey Work:
In collaboration with the Division of Aquatic Resources, Kauaʻi, we conduct vital coral reef survey work to assess the health and condition of our underwater ecosystems. Our efforts involve training local youth interested in marine biology in scuba diving and marine research techniques. Through this training, we prepare these individuals to contribute to the Association of American Underwater Scientists (AAUS) program with DAR. Conducting underwater fish and habitat use surveys, as well as coral reef surveys to collect crucial baseline and longterm data helps to support future restoration programs and conservation efforts.
Kauaʻi Coral Restoration Nursery:
Coral reefs are vital ecosystems that support an incredible array of marine life, yet they are increasingly threatened by climate change, pollution, and other human activities. Recognizing the urgent need for action, we have established a comprehensive coral restoration program. Through careful monitoring, research, and hands-on restoration efforts, we are working to rebuild and revive damaged coral reefs, ensuring their resilience and longevity for generations to come.
Native Hawaiian Fishpond Restoration:
In collaboration with Kauaʻi Sea Farm, we are proud to be involved in restorative aquaculture projects at Nōmilu, an incredibly unique and special Native Hawaiian Fishpond. By helping the family and caretakers to restore the pond with members of the community and next generation groups, we aim to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health not only in the fishpond, but also surrounding marine ecosystems that also benefit from the repercussions of this important work.
02
Ocean Cleanups & Marine Debris Upcycling.
At Hoʻomalu Ke Kai, we are passionate about keeping our oceans clean and healthy for current and future generations. Through our Ocean Cleanups & Marine Debris Upcycling program, we are actively tackling the issue of marine debris while promoting innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. Join us at one of our Last Saturday of the Month Community Cleanups or visit one of our Self Beach Cleanup Stations and join us in protecting Kauaʻi's coastline.
Underwater Cleanups:
Our dedicated team conducts regular underwater cleanups, carefully disentangling corals and removing hazards for other marine life. These efforts are essential for preserving the delicate balance of our underwater ecosystems.
Shoreline Cleanups:
From sandy beaches to remote coastlines, our shoreline cleanups are a vital part of our conservation efforts. We sift through sand for microplastics and scale rocks to remove large nets and other debris, ensuring that our coastlines remain pristine and free from pollution. We believe in the power of community involvement. That's why we host monthly cleanups open to all members of the community, as well as specialized cleanups for school groups and educational programs. Each year, we remove 10-20k lbs of marine debris, making a significant impact on the health of our oceans.
Ocean Plastic Upcycling:
But our efforts don't stop at cleanup. Through innovative upcycling initiatives, we give new life to collected marine debris. With the help of Precious Plastic machinery and Matoha Science Infrared Spectrometer Plastic Identification machine, we transform plastic waste into useful and durable materials, saving it from ending up in landfills and contributing to a circular economy.
03
Educational Outreach & Next Generation Engagement.
At Hoʻomalu Ke Kai, we believe that education is key to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our marine ecosystems. Through our Educational Outreach & Engagement program, we are dedicated to empowering individuals of all ages to become stewards of the ocean.
Community Workshops & Events:
We host a variety of community workshops and events designed to educate and inspire. From hands-on beach cleanups to interactive presentations on marine conservation, we provide opportunities for individuals to learn about the importance of preserving our oceans and how they can play an active role in protection efforts.
School Programs:
We recognize the vital role that schools play in shaping the future of our planet. That's why we offer tailored programs for students of all ages, providing engaging and informative sessions that align with curriculum standards. Through classroom presentations, field trips, and experiential learning activities, we aim to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in the next generation.
Youth Leadership & Ocean Conservation Training Programs:
We believe in the power of youth to drive positive change. Through our youth leadership programs, we empower young individuals to become advocates for the ocean. From leadership training to hands-on conservation projects, we provide opportunities for youth to develop their skills and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
